Targeting your job search

Before embarking on a job search process, it can be helpful to clarify what you are looking for in your next role to make your search as targeted as possible. Having a clear picture of what you want (and don’t want) can help streamline your search and ensure you are only investing time and energy in roles that are the right fit for you.

You can use the following questions to clarify what you’re looking for in your next role:

  • What types of positions are you open to? Full-time, part-time, contract, limited duration/seasonal, internships, etc.

  • Are you looking for remote, in-person, or hybrid work? Are you open to relocating for hybrid and in-person roles?

  • What salary range are you looking for?
Tip: When determining what salary range you are looking for with your next role, factors to consider include (1) the average salary of similar positions within your industry (resources like Glassdoor, PayScale, and Dice can help you figure this out if you are unsure) and (2) your skills, experience, and education (3) the cost of living in your location.

  • What benefits are you seeking? (Employer-sponsored health insurance, vision, dental, retirement matching, stock options, specific PTO policies, etc.)

  • What setting do you want to work in? Corporate, nonprofit, government,
    academia, etc.

  • Which of the above are your non-negotiables (i.e., you wouldn’t accept a job unless that criteria was met)? What are your negotiables (the things you could do without for the right opportunity)?
