Portfolios
Portfolios allow you to showcase your skills and expertise to a prospective employer.
By demonstrating past projects, portfolios allow you to show rather than describe your proficiency with various tools, processes, and subject matter.
Elements of a portfolio
-
Brief “About Me” - Briefly summarize your professional experience, skills,
and education.
-
Technical skills - Feature your top technical skills, including educational credentials and professional certificates or licenses.
-
Past projects - Portfolios often feature snapshots of professional, academic, or personal projects. Any project that showcases the applied use of your skills is relevant to include (just make sure what you share about the project does not breach confidentiality or intellectual property).
- Tip: Use a descriptive title to summarize each project you include.
- Tip: Include visual components for each project you feature.
-
Examples of projects you might see in portfolios for professionals in different industries:
- Project management: (1) Eagle Scout project (2) Student body event planning (3) Local public works project roadmap
- Finance: (1) Fictional budget projection (2) Marketing analysis report (3) Stock projection report
- Marketing: (1) Fictional communications plan (2) Branding style guide (3) Brand analysis report
-
Human resources: (1) Workforce planning roadmap (2) Career development program proposal
-
Shareability - Make sure you can easily and digitally share your portfolio. Often, folks will link to a portfolio on their resume and/or LinkedIn profile.
- Design - Present the information in your portfolio cleanly and clearly.
